Tidbits, a musician's benefit, Bessie Jones and the Chambers Bros.

A few words are in order.  What I get from the 'Tidbits' added to the
regular shifting and disappontments of the administration in rights,
wars and the economy is recognition of the need to consciously
build a powerful, self-sustained humanistic movement that can
engage people in taking care of each other while demanding of
and forcing our government to act accordingly.

The benefit for the musician recovering from a serious operaton
and now facing huge medical bills is typical of the situation facing
an increasing number of artists and musicians I know personally,
and, of course, of so many others with modest incomes.  To help
Phil is necessary, but only political action demanding health care
for all and separating that from the claws of the insurance industry
will actually accomplish the job.  And it can - must lead to other such
goals in our economy, wars and rights.

Thing is, there's no way people will join in such an effort without
a song in their hearts and good feelings about the people they're
working for and working with.  Towards those hearts and feelings
and concluding this email, two magnificent groups are yours for the
listening, courtesy of Wolfgangs Vault.  You can not even imagine
the music of Bessie Jones and the Georgia Sea Islanders, unless
you heard them at the Ash Grove, where these were recorded.  The
music is African-early American, kept alive by separation from the
mainland.  Listen to one or two number, and you're hooked.
As you will be with the Mississippi-fresh gospel and blues of the
young Chambers Brothers, pre-stardom and complete with their
large family joining them for Sunday night gospel.  Wolfgang's
Vault deserves thanks and support for taking these tapes and 500+
other gems, literally from my closet to the vast cyberworld.  Enjoy,
and pass it on to friends who love music.

  * Re: America: A Center-Left Nation

The debate on whether the US is a 'center-left' or 'center-right' nation
is not that hard to resolve:  Yes, the U.S. is a center-left nation and
has been so at least since 2000 when Gore and Nader accumulated
50%+ of the popular vote.  However--and similarly important--the
Euro-American population, still the majority (albeit decreasing) is
decidedly a center-right electorate and in many precincts (e.g. the
South and Rocky Mountain West), simply right-wing.  And to the extent
that the continuing relevance of white supremacy means that this sector
is akin to preferred shareholders in this enterprise, it would be folly to
ignore this community's center-right orientation.  Moreover, since the
U.S. has been driven so far to the right by the conservative upsurge
beginning in 1980, what is defined as 'center' in the U.S. could easily
be seen as 'right' in e.g. Canada.  Failure to sort out these strands
can lead to a serious misreading of the U.S. political scene.

  * The Devil in Dick Cheney

Bill Fletcher's pun on "sleight of hand" in describing Cheney's m.o.
doesn't really work. Bill would do better to go back to the root meaning
of "sleight". It comes to us from the Middle English / Old Norse for "sly".
  http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sleight

Cheney's attack on Colin Powell seems intended to inject race into
the narrative, suggesting that Powell would change his party affiliation
based on the race of the President.

But otherwise, sly or slight and the meaning and metaphor of
magician-ship don't fit the reality of what Cheney is up to.  He is neither
sly nor slight.  He is not being a magician, telling us to look one place
while taking action elsewhere. Rather, he is just straight out telling the
big lie, hoping to rewrite history. In doing so, he depends on the practice
of most reporters today to engage in mere stenography, helping Cheney
create a narrative that the facts do not support.
