Thank you for putting this out there!  My husband, who served as an army
doctor right out of his residency in San Francisco, still suffers with minor
residual PTSD from his military experience in Viet Nam.  As a practicing
Primary Care Physician, he still deals with and treats veterans of that
awful, unnecessary war and is still amazed at the extent of lasting damage
done to men who survived it!  Damn the war mongers like McNamara who send
young men and women to war for absolutely NO reason.
Peace,

Ed,

My one dissent on McNamara is that of the whole crew that sold that war,
he was the only one who was haunted by it, and admitted to the errors,
went to Vietnam to talk to the Generals there.

While the man I view as the more authentic criminal - Kissinger - is still
given time on TV and treated as a serious guy.  Is it because Kissinger
has never made the "mistake" McNamara made - of admitting to a
terrible error?

McNamara was haunted - as he should have been. Kissinger seems to
have no inner mechanism at all.

Best,
David

Ash Grove Summer actually begins tonight on the SM Pier with
one of the greatest of our original performers, Joan Baez, in a
rare visit to So. California.  Joan sang informally at the club,
especially when sister Mimi (and Richard) Farina performed.
We produced all her concerts in So. Cal. from her debut here in
1960 until 1968 or so.

A great friend and sublime artist.

Richard Montoya, the brilliant writer of Culture Clash is guest hosting
Friday,  tomorrow on KPFK's 5-6 PM show.  His musical guests are
Michelle Shocked and Bernie Pearl, playing and touting this Sunday's
festival.  This radio show should knock your socks off and bodes well
for KPFK's programming future. This was initiated by them, in the last
two days. I provided phone numbers and made a call, when asked.

And let me say I didn't know about the KPFK Board candidates coming to
Sunday's event until I just opened the email below.  Happy to have them.
Ed

Subject: Only 1 week left!!!

Dear All,

First of all, spend some time to recruit a candidate or 2 for the LSB.

There is only 1 week left before the July 15th election deadline!!  And the deadline on that day is 5 pm -- not midnight as in the past.

For questions, call Michael Sanchez, the KPFK Local Election Supervisor at (818) 985-2711 x605 or (213) 453-9047.  Or you can email him at: original-d.j.sanchez@hotmail.com or at election@kpfk.org

Also, PLEASE call the candidates you've already recruited and help them get all their paperwork filled out.  Go over their 500 word statement with them.  Help them get petition signatures.

Here are a few tips:

There will be a petition signing party at the station on Saturday from 5 to 7 pm:

Please attend if you can to sign candidates' petitions and help them out.  This is the best time and place to do this, as there will be plenty of members willing to sign petitions.

Also, Jan Goodman, a Committee to Strengthen KPFK member, has agreed to allow free admission to all candidates to help them get their petitions signed this Sunday.  Information about the event is below and also attached.

What else?  It's really important that we utilize the few days we have left to make sure that all of our candidates are actually members in good standing, have all their paper work submitted on time, have enough signatures, etc.

If you have any questions or if anything needs corrected in this email, please let me know.

;-)  Grace

Why you should buy a ticket or donate.

This fundraiser supports a series of free community events held at cultural centers around Los Angeles since the November 2008 election. Billed as "Beyond November – Party with a Purpose", these events bring together artists with advocacy and social action organizations and audiences, to entertain, to inform and to enthuse. Our theme has been universal health care, single payer. We are aiming toward a large free Summer Festival in late August 2009 that will feature musical guests, community artists and speakers. In addition, we will host an area where health, housing and other service organizations will provide direct counseling, referrals and aid to people in need.

The afternoon will be produced by our good friend, Ed Pearl, founder of The Ash Grove (1958 – 1973) on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood was a pioneering musical and political venue. The performance standards and creative interplay among musicians, young and old, produced many great artists, enriched the lives of audiences, and gave the club a leading role in the culture of a generation. Original Ash Grove concert downloads and CDs are available from Wolfgang's Vault (www.wolfgangsvault.com).

Event Co-sponsors: KPFK 90.7 fm and The Center for the Study of Political Graphics (CSPG)
