KPFK Local Station Board Ballot Slate, Lila Garrett's CONNECT THE DOTS for Sept 14

Hi.  KPFK and Pacifica should hold the position in radio in some respects
akin to that of Single Payer in health care; a 'must' alternative to the rest of
system, providing needed services (information and a dissenting voice)
for millions, etc.  As I've written, Pacifica has recently begun changing its
management and style, all for the better.  That new process must be
affirmed and strengthened, much as the public health option, endangered
by those who will lose by its success, using tactics of fear, intimidation, etc.

Terrence McNally, coordinator of the Committee to Strengthen KPFK
puts it well in remarks just below.  Pacifica election ballots are here and
many of you are subscribers.  I have attended meetings of the 'Committee',
worked with Lila Garrett, Donna Warren, Ali Lexa, Ian Masters, et al in the
previous election which resulted in Grace Aaron's becoming Exex. Director
of Pacifica, the literal rescue of WBAI and WPFW, the ascension of Alan
Minsky to Interrim Program Director of KPFK, et al.  I firmly endorse their
Candidates Slate for KPFK's Local Station Board.

1. Our work last time has made a remarkable difference at the station and the network. Sean Heitkemper is a professional and radio savvy GM. Armando Gudino is no longer PD. Grace Aaron is interim ED of Pacifica. Etc.

2. The station and the network are in extremely precarious positions financially. With Dems in power in DC and recession, fund raising is tougher than ever.

3. Our work could be reversed by this election. 60% of the KPFK LSB will be selected in the upcoming vote.

Friends and colleagues,

I was very glad to read Sean's email. I respect his vision and share his hope and challenge. I suggest we all read and reflect on the Manager's Proposed Three Year Strategic Plan he helped develop, and I attach that document in a separate email.

As far as I know, Sean made a positive personal career decision to move to other opportunities. Might he have delayed that move if KPFK and Pacifica had offered a more fiscally sound, more professional, less bureaucratic, and less contentious environment?  Perhaps.

He has made his decision. Now we must make ours.

Are we going to devolve to embody a caricature of the worst of our past -- an email version of the circular firing squad? Or are we going to thank our lucky stars that we (1) attracted and had the good sense to hire a professional radio manager, if only for a year, (2) shifted the balance of power on both the KPFK LSB and PNB in positive directions, (3) and have so far weathered the ongoing financial crisis? Are we then going to move forward to continue to build on the best of what we accomplished in the last couple of years?

It seems to me that the station and this committee have a few clear tasks before us:

(1) elect a majority of qualified, responsible, and skilled non-profit board members to the LSB
(2) search for and hire a qualified, responsible, and skilled General Manager
(3) take necessary steps to retain professional management
(4) take necessary steps to build listenership and funding

Slate of Listener Sponsored Candidates

for the KPFK Local Station Board

Please include all of these candidates.  Choose which candidate will be your 1st choice, then which your 2nd and so on.

PLEASE VOTE FOR ALL 14 CANDIDATES

Here's why we need all 14:  9 Seats will be occupied in December right after the election.  Due to term limits, two more seats will be occupied in May of 2010 by alternates, that's whoever comes in tenth and eleventh.  Even after that, as time goes by, some people will leave the board due to change of jobs, school, health or other reasons.  When they leave, alternates move up and become board members.  We want all 14 of these candidates to be seated on the LSB, starting with 9 in November but, as time goes by they all will eventually make it to he board.

Monday morning at 7 on CONNECT THE DOTS  (KPFK, 90.7 FM) or use this link:

CONGRESSMAN HENRY WAXMAN  reacts to the presidet's speech last week, and lays out in blunt terms  what we can expect by way of Healthcare "reform".   After having been in Congress for 35 years, as one of its most powerful members and Chair of House Energy and and Commerce Committee, he pulls no punches in describing what the liberal members are up against, not only from Republicans, but from centrists and Blue Dog Dems. As a pragmatist, Waxman makes a case for the "big tent' philosophy of the Democratic Party.

On the other hand,
LA City COUNCILMAN BILL ROSENDAHL, former TV commentator having hosted over 3000 public affairs shows,  and having served as former White House appointee under Jimmy Carter  has a very different take on where the Democratic Party should draw the line on Healthcare and the Dems big tent philosophy.  The contrast between these two dynamic Democrats is dramatic.

PAUL KORETZ, former Ca. Assemblyman, has just won his election as a new LA City Councilman and oposes cuts to the firefighters who serve as our most important paramedics.  Local action and inaction are where the rubber hits the road on heathcare "reform".
