Hi.  Here’s an unusual emailing from me, with this appeal, coupled with

a menu of interesting subjects, from the Nation magazine.  ALSO, likely

stupidly, I signed on to a new security system offer, incessantly promoted

by my new Dell computer.  One effect is to block attachments. I figured out

opening them by holding down the ‘control’ key and left clicking the curser

at the same time.  Same with signups, etc.  I don’t know if it comes to you

blocked, but if so, this works. -Ed

Emergency Petition to Stop H.R. 3

If we can't stop it in the Senate, the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act" (H.R. 3) will resurrect the failed "Stupak ban" from the health care debate, effectively banning even private coverage of abortion care ... and a tax provision in the bill will could mean that rape and incest survivors who choose abortion care would be audited by the IRS.

Dear Steve,

Extremism has defined the Republican House majority since it took power in January. And chief among their extremist pursuits has been a relentless legislative war on women. They voted to defund Planned Parenthood ... they used the budget compromise to take away access to abortion for women (especially low-income women) in the District of Columbia ... and just last week, they passed one of the most sweeping attacks on choice ever.

Help stop the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act" (H.R. 3) in Senate by signing our emergency petition now.

We expect that Republicans in the Senate will now try to push this legislation through as an amendment to another bill.

H.R. 3 does a lot more than its name would imply.

  • It resurrects the failed "Stupak ban" from the healthcare debate, effectively banning even private coverage of abortion care, and adds a new tax penalty to ensure that the ban becomes a reality.
  • It opens up the possibility that rape and incest survivors who choose abortion care could be audited by the IRS.
  • It makes permanent the current annual ban on federal abortion funding known as the "Hyde Amendment."
  • It continues a funding ban for the District of Columbia.
  • It expands refusal clauses that allow healthcare providers to refuse to provide abortion services.
  • Finally, it has been reported that Republicans are trying to reinstate a widely-condemned redefinition of rape through behind-the-scenes procedural tactics.

Senators need to hear from Americans en masse that it's up to them to hold the line. Senate Leadership can't let H.R. 3 be snuck onto the floor as an amendment and ALL Senators need to know that Americans oppose the House GOP's war on women.

Sign the petition now.

Americans want jobs, not extremist attacks on women's fundamental constitutional rights. After you take action, please spread the word.

Thank you for once again doing your part to speak out in defense of the American Way.

Sincerely,
Michael B. Keegan signature

South Asia Without Osama bin Laden
GRAHAM USHER
The killing of Osama bin Laden by US Special Forces has tipped US-Pakistan relations into their deepest pit since 9/11. They have not yet reached rupture: both countries are aware of the consequences that would have for their respective wars. And there are opportunities in the Al Qaeda leader's abrupt demise. But both Islamabad and Washington will have to break from failed policies. Currently the countries seem bent only on repeating them. Barack Obama's gentle call for a government investigation into how the world's number-one fugitive could be hiding in plain sight in a military cantonment deep in Pakistan has been amplified by furious demands from Congress that all aid be cut.

Taking Back the States
NATION EDITORS
If one piece of bad news was slightly under-appreciated in November, it was this: in addition to seizing the House, the Republican Party won total control of twenty-one state governments, including the governor's office as well as both sides of the statehouse. But now the faint glimmer of a silver lining appears. Empowered to put the philosophy that had long been gestating in right-wing think tanks into practice in these "trifecta" states, the armies unleashed by antigovernment guru Grover Norquist are either marching off a cliff—or into a valley filled with the massing forces of popular resistance.

The Kushner Affair
NATION EDITORS
It took just eight minutes of their May 2 meeting for the board of trustees of CUNY—a proud public institution that has provided opportunity and scholarly refuge to generations of New Yorkers—to thoroughly and abjectly humiliate themselves. A good portion of the blame lands at the feet of Jeffrey Wiesenfeld, the trustee who attempted to deny an honorary degree to esteemed playwright and Nation editorial board member Tony Kushner by grossly caricaturing his views on Israel and insulting him as a "Jewish anti-Semite." But the entire board shares some responsibility. As Wiesenfeld used snippets of Kushner's words and guilt by association to defame him, not one trustee objected or reminded the board of the principle of academic freedom or wondered what one's views about Israel have to do with receiving an accolade from John Jay College. In the end, they expeditiously tabled discussion of Kushner's award, presumably hoping the mess would just go away.
