Obama Guts Copenhagen, More Ash Grove on Wolfgang's Vault

Copenhagen: Obama Guts Progressive Values

The President of the United States did several things in his agreement
today with China, India, and South Africa:

* He blew up the United Nations. The idea that theres a world community
that means something has disappeared tonight. The clear point is, you
poor nations can spout off all you want on questions like human rights
or the role of women or fighting polio or handling refugees, but when
you get too close to the things that count —the fossil fuel that's at
the center of our economy— you can forget about it. We're not
interested. You're a bother, and when you sink beneath the waves we
don't want to hear much about it. The dearest hope of the American right
for fifty years was essentially realized because in the end coal is at
the center of America's economy. We'd already done this with war and
peace, and now we've done it with global warming. What exactly is the
point of the UN now?

* He formed a league of super-polluters, and would-be super polluters.
China, the US, and India dont want anyone controlling their use of coal
in any meaningful way. It is a coalition of foxes who will together
govern the henhouse. It is no accident that the targets are weak to
nonexistent. We don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves with
targets, he said. Indeed. And now imagine what this agreement will look
like with the next Republican president.

* He demonstrated the kind of firmness and resolve that Americans like
to see. It will play well politically at home and that will be the worst
part of the deal. Having spurned Europe and the poor countries of the
world, he will reap domestic political benefit. George Bush couldn't
have done this because the reaction would have been too great. Obama has
taken the mandate that progressives worked their hearts out to give him,
and used it to gut the ideas that progressives have held most dear. The
ice caps won't be the only things we lose with this deal.

Subject: Concert Vault Weekend - December 18, 2009

Free 2nd Day Air through 12/22
Hello again, and another happy Friday to you all!

This past Tuesday we released 21 new concerts recorded at the legendary Ash Grove club in Los Angeles. We're also offering you a peek inside the club, as we've added the only surviving video ever filmed there. Check out the spectacular images, music and interview material of Muddy Waters recorded in the summer of 1971.

For more roots music recorded at the Ash Grove, we highly recommend shows from a genuine jug band, the Lydia E. Pinkham Superior Orchestra; the talented folksters New Lost City Ramblers (with Mike Seeger); and the spiritually cleansing Bessie Jones & the Georgia Sea Island Singers. Or, from the Newport Festival, you can get some early New Orleans Dixieland jazz from Phil Napolean and His Original Memphis Five or another dose of gospel from the impossibly deep voice of Jimmy Jones.

As a transition from roots music, we're featuring shows from Chuck Berry and Link Wray, two of the most influential rock guitarists in history. And then enjoy the fruits of it all with shows by the Americana-drenched Rick Danko or the electric blues virtuoso guitarist Rory Gallagher.

We've also got two playlists to take you on broader tours of the Vault. The first is a holiday gift from we employees, Staff Picks, Volume 5. You should never trust a skinny chef, and we promise that there's good music here. The second comes from the amazing singer/songwriter Brett Dennen, who created a mix of some of his favorite performances in the Vault from influences like The Grateful Dead, Booker T. Jones, and Bob Marley.

Thanks for listening, happy holidays, and have a wonderful weekend!

Comment of the Week: Freddie King - Ash Grove, 8/25/1970 Comment of the Week: Freddie King - Ash Grove, 8/25/1970
I was at this show. Freddie was the opening act for the Byrds! Jerry Garcia was in the audience. One of the most memorable shows I had the good luck to be at. Freddie tore the place down. Hot pink satin suit, white frilly shirt with French cuffs. He took his coat off after the first song and ripped! I never saw anyone sweat so much. just BURNIN!
