Our economic system is unsustainable by its very nature. The only
response to climate chaos and peak oil is major social change
There is no meaningful response to climate change without massive
social change. A cap on this and a quota on the other won't do it.
Tinker at the edges as we may, we cannot sustain earth's life-support
systems within the present economic system.
Capitalism is not sustainable by its very nature. It is predicated on
infinitely expanding markets, faster consumption and bigger production
in a finite planet. And yet this ideological model remains the central
organising principle of our lives, and as long as it continues to be
so it will automatically undo (with its invisible hand) every single
green initiative anybody cares to come up with.
(This is a point I keep harping on//lcm)
Much discussion of energy, with never a word about power, leads to the
fallacy of a low-impact, green capitalism somehow put at the service
of environmentalism. In reality, power concentrates around wealth.
Private ownership of trade and industry means that the decisive
political force in the world is private power. The corporation will
outflank every puny law and regulation that seeks to constrain its
profitability. It therefore stands in the way of the functioning
democracy needed to tackle climate change. Only by breaking up
corporate power and bringing it under social control will we be able
to overcome the global environmental crisis.

Seeing Public Subsidy (Not Public Option) Investors Flock to Health Insurers 21 Dec 2009 Investors are seeing the Senate's version of health care reform as a massive public subsidy for insurance companies -- and as a result, are sending the sector's stock prices shooting up, up, up. Stripped of a government-run insurance plan, the bill would give tens of millions of Americans no option but to start paying hefty premiums to private companies. The rise in stock prices has been particularly striking in the period since Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Aetna) said on October 27 that he would filibuster a Senate health care reform bill if it included a public option - a threat that caused Senate leaders to cave without much of a fight.
Breakdown of major health insurance company stock performance from Oct. 27 to last Friday's market close:
- Coventry Health Care, Inc. is up 31.6 percent;
- CIGNA Corp. is up 29.1 percent;
- Aetna Inc. is up 27.1 percent;
- WellPoint, Inc. is up 26.6 percent;
- UnitedHealth Group Inc. is up 20.5 percent;
- And Humana Inc. is up 13.6 percent.
And well the Healthcare Mafia should know where the Profit Centers are in this Bill. They have insider trader knowledge. Over 3,300 of their top Lobbyists wrote or orchestrated most of the Bill's key profit provisions for their Corporate Fascist Employers. This is the greatest Boondoggle Swindle to be concocted on Planet Earth, ever.

Shortly after 1 am on Winter Solstice, the Senate approved the first of 5 voting sprees which must pass by at least 60/40 in order that the Bill move forward to merge with the House Bill, to which it has no resemblance in intent nor purpose.

This longest night of the year found Senators snowbound in DC by a major blizzard as they congratulated majority leader Harry Reid for conning, bribing, and lying his way to victory. Future massive cash bribes from the Healthcare Mafia were assured.

This Bill is not universal, not equitable, nor affordable. It shall not end medical bankruptcies, and won't end deaths due to denials and delays in Healthcare.

White snows ran metaphorically red with the blood of innocent Americans who lives were being sacrificed on Capitol Hill early Monday morning. Final ratification of this massive Corporate Murder of Americans, ironically, is scheduled for final execution at 7 pm on Christmas Eve, desecrating a day formerly used to celebrate birth of the Prince of Peace.

If the vote remains 60/40 each time the clock tolls, Wall $treet will rip the heart out of millions of ordinary Americans for decades to come, leaving far more than the 45,000 corpses of those they murdered in Christmas Present and Christmases Past.
