Subject: #-203 Letter to editor opportunity

The following articles, columns, and/or editorials are published in today’s LA Times (print edition) or NY Times (web edition).  One or more provide an opportunity to write a letter to the editor to enunciate our message of peace.

LA Times:         nothing today:

NY Times:        seven items today:

---  Harsh Words From Turkey About Israel, and From Iran About United States    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/23/world/middleeast/irans-president-mahmoud-ahmadinejad-rails-against-the-west-in-united-nations-speech.html  Reports Turkey PM said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a “bleeding wound” that the international community can no longer accept, accused Israel of thwarting all attempts to solve the problem.  From nuclear weapons to control of the occupied territories to humanitarian aid, he said, Israel has contradicted the wishes and norms of the rest of the world.   He noted that ““If you want to send a box of tomatoes to Palestine, this is subject to approval from Israel, and I don’t think that is humanitarian.”

---  The Arab Spring Finds Itself Upstaged by a New Season    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/23/world/middleeast/israeli-palestinian-dispute-upstages-arab-spring-at-united-nations.html  Reports celebration of the Arab spring is overshadowed by the Palestinian bid for U.N. membership.

---for tomorrows print edition   Palestinians Rally in West Bank for Abbas Speech; Clashes Reported    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/24/world/middleeast/palestinians-rally-in-west-bank-for-abbas-speech-clashes-reported.html Reports thousands rally.  There was no violence.  Israel army had a heavy presence in West bank.

--- for tomorrows print edition   Amid Statehood Bid, Tensions Simmer in West Bank    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/24/world/middleeast/west-bank-tensions-simmer-amid-palestinian-united-nations-statehood-bid.html  Background report about settler violence against Palestinians and that settlers are newly armed by the Israeli army.

--- NY Times editorial  The Palestinians’ Bid  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/23/opinion/the-palestinians-bid-for-statehood.html   Says President Obama was right to stand with Israel. Now he has to push for a bold and fair deal.  Says, “The United States and its partners should put a map and a deal on the table, with a timeline for concluding negotiations and a formal United Nations statehood vote. The proposal must be bold and fair and backed by the Security Council and the Arab League. And they need to help sell it to the Israeli and Palestinian people — not just politicians.  There is still some time left to avoid a complete diplomatic train wreck.  But not a lot of time.”

---  repeat from yesterday  Congressman Keith Ellison Op-Ed   Support the Palestinian Bid for Statehood     http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/22/opinion/sunday/support-the-palestinian-bid-for-statehood.html Says the United States should support the Palestinian Authority’s bid for statehood at the United Nations. The Palestinian people deserve a state now.  Says he is reminded of what the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: “The time is always right to do what’s right.”  Says the Palestinian bid, “is an opportunity, not a threat.  We should seize it now.”

---  Four letters   http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/23/opinion/a-mideast-moment-at-the-united-nations.html   respond to Olmert’s Op-Ed yesterday.  1st asks why the Palestinians turned down offers in 2000 and 2008, and why they would make a deal now?  2nd backs Olmert’s call for reciprocal recognition that represents the enlightened sensibility.  3rd blames election of Hamas that he calls terrorists, 4th says the presence of the settlements demonstrates that Israel is insincere about peace.

LETTER TO NY TIMES

RE: "The Palestinians’ Bid"      Sept. 17    Op-Ed    (for NY Times)

The Times is correct when it says that President Obama must now push for a bold and fair deal.  But the Times is wrong to praise Obama’s Wednesday speech at the U.N. that was so biased that only Israeli and Jewish American hard liners could love it, which they did.  Obama's failure to mention the 1967 boundaries, settlements, Jerusalem, or refugees

shows a President who has lost touch the role the United States should play and lacks the political courage to stand up to the Israel lobby.  The Israelis and Palestinians lack political courage, but apparently so does Obama.  His lecturing about the need for political will among the Israelis and Palestinians rings empty.  He should lead by example, but fails to do so.  Pathetic!
